Environmental DNA
Trace genetic material shed by organisms – sampled from a litre of stream water, a scoop of soil, a swab of bark. Sequenced, classified, counted.
- Reveals
- Cryptic, nocturnal, microscopic and non-vocal taxa – fish, amphibians, invertebrates, fungi, plants.
- Strength
- Detects presence even when the organism never appears in front of an observer.
- Limit
- Reference-database coverage caps how much of the read pool can be confidently identified.
